AFFORDABLE BENEFITS THAT COMPETE

Disability coverage for short absences and long ones

Group disability keeps your team paid when an illness or injury keeps them from working.

Short-term coverage

Short-term disability covers time off for surgery, an injury or recovering from childbirth. It pays from the 8th day for up to 12 weeks.

Long-term coverage

Long-term disability covers a serious illness or injury that keeps an employee out for months. It pays after 90 days, for up to 5 years.

Offer both

Offer both, and long-term disability starts as short-term ends, so employees are never left without income.

HOW IT WORKS

How Short and Long-Term Disability Insurance Works

Short-term and long-term disability are quoted separately. Your business can pay for the coverage, or offer it as a voluntary plan that employees pay for at group rates, at no cost to your business.

Your quote shows the exact benefits and rates for your group.

Price example: For example, for 10 employees earning about $45,000 a year, employer-paid short-term disability costs about $184 a month in total, and long-term disability about $53. Your rate depends on your group.

  • Short-term disability replaces 60% of an employee’s weekly pay, up to $1,000 a week, from the 8th day of an illness or injury for up to 12 weeks. Long-term disability starts after 90 days, about when short-term ends, and replaces 60% of monthly pay for up to 5 years.

  • No. You can offer short- or long-term disability as a voluntary plan, which employees pay for at group rates, so it costs your business nothing. At least two employees need to enroll.

  • Coverage applies from the day an employee becomes disabled. Short-term disability then has a 7-day waiting period, so benefits are paid from the 8th day.

  • Yes. It pays for 6 weeks after a normal delivery and 8 weeks after a C-section.

  • Plans your business pays for have no pre-existing condition exclusion. On voluntary plans, a condition treated in the 3 months before coverage starts has a 12-month waiting period.

  • Employees file directly with MetLife, online or by phone. Your part is to confirm their employment details.

  • Yes. Owners, partners and proprietors are eligible if they meet the same requirements as other employees.

  • It depends on who pays. Benefits from a plan your business pays for are generally taxable to the employee. Benefits from a plan employees pay for with after-tax pay generally are not. Check with your tax advisor.
