FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Questions employers often ask about group life insurance

No. Supplemental life is paid by employees, so it costs your business nothing. You can also pay for basic life for everyone, or offer both.
No. Neither basic nor supplemental life requires an exam. Employees who choose more than $100,000 of supplemental life answer a health questionnaire, and MetLife approves the extra amount.
AD&D stands for accidental death and dismemberment. It’s included with both basic and supplemental life, and the AD&D benefit equals the life benefit.
Yes, with supplemental life. A spouse can be covered for up to $25,000, and no more than half the employee’s own amount. Children can be covered for $1,000 to $10,000. Neither needs to answer health questions.
Basic life reduces by 35% at age 65 and 50% at age 70. Supplemental life doesn’t reduce with age.
They can convert their life insurance to an individual policy.
Yes. Owners, partners and proprietors are eligible if they meet the same requirements as other employees.
You may be able to deduct what your business pays toward premiums, and employer-paid coverage up to $50,000 is generally not taxed as income to the employee. Check with your tax advisor.
We’ll contact you before your policy term ends to review renewal. Your rates stay guaranteed through your first 24 months.

Want to cover everyone?
Basic life is paid by your business and gives every eligible employee the same flat amount, with AD&D included.
No benefits budget yet?
Offer supplemental life as a voluntary plan. Employees choose their amount and pay the premium at group rates, and your business pays nothing.
Want both?
Pay for basic life, and let employees buy more on top for themselves and their families.
